This guide is detailed to give you a clear understanding of what your time and efforts are going into, as well as a good understanding of what you will be gaining if the treatment goes well. Since people may start at different stages of hair loss or may be regrowing hair in different areas, the use of Finasteride may differ slightly from person to person, but in general, this guide will cover what you should expect on average. With an understanding of the process and what to expect when using Finasteride, you will be better able to decide if the medication is right for you, as well as be more patient and less stressed during the early stages of treatment.

Finasteride is a medication commonly used in treating hair loss in men. Typically prescribed to patients with androgenic alopecia, known more commonly as male-pattern baldness, this common medication has proven to be very effective in maintaining and sometimes regrowing hair. Finasteride works by inhibiting an enzyme, 5-alpha reductase. This decreases the concentration of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is the main cause of androgenic alopecia. DHT causes hair loss in men by causing miniaturization of terminal hair, and Finasteride helps by interrupting this harmful process to new and current hair. It is important to take this medication if you have male pattern hair loss and it causes you stress or discomfort. Remember that if hair loss is not a bother to you, it is not necessary to take this medication. Always consult a physician before starting a new medication.

What is Healpecia?

The underlying cause of male pattern balding is a genetically predetermined increased response to the androgen hormone DHT. The process of hair growth is affected; instead of the usual pattern growth, there is a shortening and finer production of hair until growth ceases altogether. In female pattern hair loss, the cause is not so clear, but the general pattern of hair thinning is similar.

Hair grows from follicles, which are tiny pit-like structures in the skin. Starting about 3-4 months after an individual is born, growth of hair will occur over almost all the skin, with the exception of the lips, nipples, palms of hands, soles of feet, and scar tissue. The growth of hair occurs in cycles consisting of 2-3 years of growth phase, and a 3-4 month resting phase after the growth phase. After the resting phase, the hair falls out and is replaced by a new one. It is normal to lose 100-150 hairs per day, but with male pattern balding, this number becomes excessive.

Healpecia is a common form of hair loss that is seen in both men and women. This condition can be a devastating and disfiguring disease that causes psychological stress and severe appearance concerns. It is estimated that more than 6 million men have a genetic predisposition for hair loss and balding, and in women, the disease can be seen to lead to hair thinning or even a total loss of hair.

How does Healpecia work?

In people prone to balding, certain hair follicles have a genetic sensitivity to androgens. The androgens cause a shortening of the cycles of hair growth and subsequent thinning of the hair until growth ceases and the hair is lost. Androgens do this by taking action on the many androgen receptors that are located on the skin and in the hair follicles. The most important androgen for the initiation and progression of balding is dihydrotestosterone (DHT) which has a great affinity and activity at the androgen receptor sites.

Hair is composed of long, twisted keratin fibers that are held in place by an underlying network of blood vessels. The hair follicle is a tunnel-like segment of the epidermis that extends down into the dermis of the skin. At the base of the follicle is the hair bulb, where rapidly growing matrix cells become keratinized and die as a result of a lack of blood supply. This action of cell division and growth allows hair to be formed and it is subsequently pushed through the skin's surface by more recently formed hairs. Surrounding the hair bulb is an inner and outer sheath of tissue which works to protect and mold the growing hair shaft. This hair development process is repeated in cycles and varies with regard to the length of time each cycle may take.

The cause of pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia) is a topic that is not fully understood. We do know that in people who are genetically predisposed to balding, certain sex hormones called androgens affect the hair follicles. To understand how this occurs, a brief lesson on how hair is formed is in order.

Benefits of using Healpecia

Improved hair growth. The hair which is most likely to respond to treatment is hair at the top of the scalp, around the crown. A regrowth of terminal hair, the hard and relatively thick hair, is most likely around this area, with patients noticing an increase in soft, thin vellus hair. With sustained treatment, it can go on to developing a thicker and more cosmetically acceptable result. Reduction in further hair loss.

The majority of men who take Healpecia will see a slowing down in further hair loss, and some may even regrow some hair that has been lost. The earlier on in the stage of hair loss, the better the chances of preventing further severe hair loss. There are several benefits of using Healpecia (finasteride) for male pattern hair loss. The following is a list of those most commonly noted by users.

Dosage and Administration

Populations that are more susceptible to alterations of dosage are patients with kidney problems, as they have decreased drug elimination rates and may need to limit doses. Lastly, the elderly who have a much slower metabolism. It is also especially important for elderly patients to remember this drug must be taken continuously for an undetermined amount of time, stopping the treatment will cause original symptoms to return. The recommended dosage of finasteride for men is from 1 mg to 5 mg pills, taken once a day. Patients on finasteride should contact a doctor if they missed a dose. It is important for the patient to take the missed dose as soon as they remember, and they should continue with the next dose at the normal time. If the patient forgets, the doctor should advise them to just continue on to their routine and not to double the dosage.

Precautions and Warnings

Currently, the link between finasteride and increased risk of development of more serious prostate conditions or prostate cancer has not been established. If finasteride were to increase a patient's risk for prostate cancer, it would need to be taken continually and there would have to be a greater exposure to the drug. Keep in mind that in the Prostate Cancer Prevention Trial (PCPT), in which patients were given finasteride, the incidences of overall Gleason grades of 7-10 prostate cancers were higher in the group of patients taking finasteride compared to those on placebo. However, the data revealed no statistically significant increase in the very high-grade cancers or those specific patients. These findings were not duplicated in the Reduction by Dutasteride of Prostate Cancer Events (REDUCE) trial with dutasteride. Based on these findings, it's unclear as to how finasteride would cause an increased risk for serious prostate conditions. Currently, both the FDA and MSD suggest that patients taking finasteride undergo regular checkups for prostate cancer. However, this is the aim for all men. Because it is still ambiguous whether finasteride is the cause for higher grade cancers and it's not a concern confirmed in European countries, the recommendations for checkups are not the same worldwide. Men taking finasteride must decide for themselves whether they should have regular checkups for prostate cancer.

Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should not handle broken or crushed finasteride tablets. Finasteride can cause birth defects in male fetuses. Exposure to whole tablets is not expected to cause birth defects as long as tablets are not swallowed. Because of this chance of birth defects, finasteride is only for men. Also, elderly patients are at a higher risk for experiencing side effects while using finasteride. Finally, finasteride is not expected to affect concomitant therapy. It is safe to use finasteride with medications such as alpha-adrenergic blockers, antihypertensive agents, and lipid-lowering agents because finasteride is not metabolized extensively in the liver. This is especially important information because most aged men suffer from prostate disease and are most likely to be using these sorts of medications.

Possible Side Effects

These side effects above may disappear after the drug is stopped. If continued or severe, stop the medication and do not restart. Although it has been accounted that some side effects have continued after the medication has been stopped, if this occurs, please immediately contact your doctor. If you notice any other effects, check with your healthcare professional.

Other side effects of finasteride that were not included in the 1-year original study are:

  • Breast tenderness and enlargement;
  • Testicular pain;
  • Male infertility and/or poor quality of semen;
  • Possibly, only while taking finasteride and not after stopping, some decrease in body hair;
  • Unwanted body hair;
  • Unable to have or maintain an erection;
  • Dizziness;
  • Weakness;
  • Feeling like you might pass out;
  • Headache;
  • Runny nose;
  • Skin rash;
  • Male sexual function problems.

Drug Interactions

Finasteride should not be used with another medicine that contains finasteride, such as Proscar.

Finasteride can interfere with PSA laboratory tests for prostate cancer. If you are scheduled to have a lab test for prostate cancer, tell your prescriber or healthcare professional that you are taking finasteride.

Although certain medicines should never be used together at all, in other cases two different medicines can be used together even if an interaction might occur. In these cases, your doctor may want to change your dose or take other precautions. Tell your prescriber or healthcare professional about all other medicines you are taking, including nonprescription medicines. Also, tell your prescriber or healthcare professional if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or use illegal drugs. These may affect the way your medicine works. Check with your healthcare professional before stopping or starting any of your medicines.

Contraindications

A recent clinical trial for finasteride for the treatment of BPH and an off-point study revealed that two men who were taking finasteride impregnated their wives during pregnancy. The men discontinued the drug and these women gave birth to normal children. This incidence is proportional to the number of pregnancies in the general population, and as the sample size increases, the chance of the birth of a child with a birth defect, if any, is up to 20%. The risk to the offspring of finasteride-fathering a child is almost zero.

In the finasteride group, the mean percent changes relative to baseline of all semen parameters were a 26% decrease in sperm motility, a 6% decrease in sperm count, and an 8% decrease in seminal volume. These changes in sperm parameters were reversible and persisted for up to 6 months in the men off finasteride. In the placebo group, semen data were also collected, and these men had no changes from the baseline data. Data are not available for the year-end of the studies done on the men who fathered children during these studies.

No adequate or well-controlled studies have been done in human pregnant women. The effects of finasteride use on the male fetus are not known. During the studies, where women have taken the drug or have been exposed to the drug inadvertently, a semen analysis was done on the male partners of these women at the end of the study. In two of these studies, an inadequate number of individuals with baseline and end-of-treatment semen analyses provided data for the conclusions.

A male fertility study in rats receiving finasteride for 64 days at 1600 times the human dose AUC demonstrated an increase in embryo resorption and a decrease in litter size, with no effect on viability or developmental outcomes of offspring, at the doses 250 mg/kg/day (167 times the human dose). In another study in mice treated at the same time and dose for 10 days, followed by an observation period of 30 days, there was an increased incidence and severity of hypospadias, which is a decrease in the location of the external urethral meatus, and a decrease in the fertility of the offspring. These findings are of no clinical significance.

It is important for a male patient to inform his physician if he is planning to father a child or if he has already fathered a child while on finasteride. There was no effect of finasteride on the fertility of male rats. It appears that the effect of the drug on male fertility, seen in the transient, is related to a mechanism of adaptation to low androgen levels.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the common side effects of finasteride? Decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, ejaculation disorder, breast changes, and hypersensitivity are some of the known sexual side effects. These decreased sexual side effects typically resolve within a couple of weeks after stopping the medication, but can persist for a long time possibly indefinitely. These side effects are sometimes referred to as Post-Finasteride Syndrome (PFS), which is a series of symptoms that former finasteride users experience, including persisting sexual, neurological, and mental side effects. Some of these symptoms are closely related to androgen deficiency such as low libido, erectile dysfunction, and decreased arousal. It is often difficult to distinguish whether these symptoms are the result of androgen deficiency or other sexual and neurological side effects. As finasteride inhibits the amount of androgens in the body, the associated side effects of androgen deficiency and PFS could be attributed to the reduction of DHT, neurosteroids, allopregnanolone, and THDOC in the brain.
