The effect of a good career choice on young people
These are the positive psychological effects of guiding young people in choosing a career.
The interest in writing this article on vocational guidance in choosing a career came to me when I saw in my consultations how some young people who had already completed a career developed problems of anxiety, fear, insecurity, and feelings of not being able to succeed in the workplace because they realized that the chosen profession was not the one they liked or did not fit their interests.
In this sense, it is important for younger students to feel self-fulfillment also through their choice of career, as they are at a stage where they are at the beginning of a new career path. They are at a formative stage of their personal development.
Here we will review several key ideas that can benefit those who are in a situation where they have already graduated in some profession or vocation and have discovered that it was not the choice they are passionate about, and young people who are in the period of their school lives in which it is good to make a decision about the career they want to study.
From what age does vocational orientation begin?
The earlier it is, much better will be its effects in the formation of adolescent.. But, in addition, it must be clear that the process of discovering a vocation is not something that is done only individually, but is a phenomenon based on social interactions.
Thus, within the course "How to develop your professional identity through self-knowledge" that I have been teaching for several years, there were groups of first year high school students who, at the end of the course, were able to notice how they were better able to discover and reaffirm their talents, interests and motivations; they expressed more clearly their personal arguments as to why they wanted such a profession.
In addition, in the workshop meetings with parents and students, there was a great enthusiasm for sharing with the family. a great enthusiasm for sharing this information with the family.. The fact of letting others know the type of vocation for which they felt more inclined allowed them to develop a great sense of accomplishment.
The students who participated in this workshop when they were in their first or second year of high school showed satisfaction in placing themselves in their future plans. They experienced greater confidence and security in their talents and challenges presented by their first work experience.
The phases of the process
What is the process necessary to prepare adolescents and young people for career choice? Its stages are as follows.
1. Assessment of Aptitudes, Personal Interests, Intelligence, Personality.
These psychological characteristics form part of the most relevant variables for the choice of professional to choose professional opportunities that, due to their characteristics, or frustrate the person.
2. To know and analyze the results obtained in each area.
This task is carried out with the counselor, and the objective is to identify and reaffirm the talents that the person is already manifesting in each opportunity he/she has had within their academic, social, family, recreational, and sports experience.
3. Identify your areas of opportunity
This allows you to develop other talents that will be needed for the interests you have already discovered.
4. To focus information of himself for his self-knowledge.
That is to say, to be aware of his or her experiences that have allowed him or her to develop mentally, emotionally and physically.
5. Identify how he/she has developed motivation
In this phase explore the issue of why his or her interests in certain areas have arisen, to see clearly what his or her interests are.In this phase we explore the subject of why his or her interests in certain areas have arisen, to see clearly what are the motivations that incline him or her to feel the desire to know or learn something new.
6. Perform actions and reflections to develop a sense of achievement.
This allows to generate feelings of security, self-confidence and positive self-appraisal of oneself. You can get opinions from friends, family, or parents to help you evaluate your decision so that these ideas do not generate doubt or confusion.
7. Integration of information
Review as many times as necessary the areas of interest to structure your decision. to structure your decision..
8. Advise parents or legal guardians
The objective here is to guide parents so that they can so that they can accompany and support their child in this process..
The process of preparation and establishment of expectations
Going through this process prepares the student to be more responsible for himself, to develop self-management of his goals and interests, and to strengthen his self-esteem and self-knowledge. These are important resources for their personal development.
From this point on, the student will be shown the real possibilities that exist in the academic and professional field for who can make a free decision based on inner exploration and self-knowledge.. All this while giving advice to parents so that they collaborate and participate in the guidance process being properly informed in the educational reality so that they trust in the choice of their children.
For the development of young people at this stage it is considered that an adequate process for each young person in career choice will ensure satisfaction with their decision, allowing them to achieve feelings of accomplishment and self-fulfillment..
What happens when you have already started a career?
But... What happens to young people who were not able to go through this process and find themselves at a crucial moment in their lives, seeing that they are unable to have a productive life because they made a mistake in their choice of career and develop feelings of dissatisfaction, demotivation, worry, fears, insecurities, anxiety and sadness, unable to find a new meaning to their lives?
In these cases it is advisable to go to psychotherapy to find a new meaning to their lives. This involves:
- Changing their understanding of fears, anxieties, insecurities that prevent them from acting and realizing any desire that may arise in the person.
- Finding what prevented him/her from discovering him/herself and being able to choose a future that offers personal and work satisfaction so that he/she can rebuild his/her present.
- Edify the experiences that have generated this emotional crisis, so that they can learn from what is no longer functional and develop their sense of achievement through new academic or professional opportunities.
- Disengage from feelings of frustration to manage their creativity towards new interests.
- Develop their self-esteem.
- Have references, stories of achievement and support networks with people who nurture their sense of accomplishment.
- Gradually begin to engage in activities that he/she really enjoys.
With these actions, which can be carried out in sessions with an expert or with self-management, you can begin a change based on discovering that you have everything within your reach to find new ways to manage your life.
Concluding
We can conclude with this that not all young people are able to develop a good self-knowledge, with a sense of achievement that nourishes their self-esteem. and security that allow them to make a decision without being influenced by their parents' desires or interests that take them away from their true selves. However, there are resources to redirect these situations.
