Why dont we keep our New Years resolutions?
The main reasons why New Year's resolutions have little chance.
We tend to think of personal development as something that happens throughout our lives. However, neither personal development nor change for the better in general works like that.
It is at certain moments in our lives when we get tired of a certain situation we are living, we make an analysis resolution, and we decide to live a process of change. Exactly: in life there is no constant change, but specific moments in which we live a personal transformation. So... why don't we keep our New Year's resolutions?
Personal development after New Year's Eve
The New Year is usually an excuse to set goals, resolutions, which in reality are closely related to the personal and real change we want to achieve. However, those goals or resolutions are rarely fulfilled... At the same time that we find ourselves with an ideal moment to commit ourselves and transform our day to day life, we rarely achieve it.What's stopping you? What's the problem?
In the last 10 years I have accompanied as a psychologist and coach people from up to 8 different countries in their change processes through empoderamientohumano.com. Although the change that each person needs to live is different, there are a series of common factors that make change possible... and at the same time, those factors disappear in the New Year as if by magic.
Next I am going to explain what are the 4 keys to really live your process of change and personal transformation and what are the 3 factors that are probably preventing you from living it in the New Year.
A process of change is not only about reflection and purpose.. No matter how much you read self-help books or listen to lectures, it is only information that can move you or make you think, but not a change in itself. Change is only possible if you change, and that happens with different actions (they can be small daily actions of your day to day life, in relation to how you communicate or use your time, understand your emotions, relate, etc.).
There are 4 clear keys to achieve changes, purposes and objectives: commitment, constancy, action plan and company.
1. Commitment
One of the main problems when we set resolutions is that our only commitment is that... to raise it and maybe try to take some steps, but not to live the whole process.. You must be committed to go all the way. Only 100% will do.
2. Constancy
A process of change involves small changes every day, not meeting 1 or 2 weekly objectives.. The change is in you and must be in you.
3. Action plan
Without action there is only thought, intention, will, not genuine change. An action plan with concrete objectives that will lead you to your personal change will make you achieve more results, new experiences will make you achieve more results, new experiences, more wellbeing and rewarding experiences than all the New Year's resolutions you can imagine.
4. Company
Above all, company is important, because we are social beings who need each other to get out of our personal circles.. For this reason it is important that in your process of change you have professional and expert supervision. Why don't you usually keep your New Year's resolutions?
The above keys reflect in turn what are the main factors why we do not achieve the famous New Year's resolutions. They are these.
1. They are not the right resolutions
We choose them from the desire but not from the reality or our limits, and above all, they are not resolutions that really imply a change. Going to the gym or quitting Smoking is great, but it is not the real change. The real change is: what is it that prevents you from doing it? What has to change in you for you to live a life where health (without tobacco) or going to the gym or doing physical activity is an everyday thing that is part of you?
Lack of commitment
We make resolutions, but we do not have the commitment to live the process of change that leads us to achieve them.
3. Lack of consistency and companionship
We make resolutions in moments of excitement, but then we do not know how to we do not know how to manage the moments when, once again, we are overcome by laziness and procrastination. and procrastination. With the necessary company, commitment and perseverance, this would not happen.
Now it's time to stop making New Year's resolutions and focus your goals on something more important and profound: what is the personal change you want to make within yourself that will transform your life and experiences? Tell me if you want to.
