Why everyone needs a coach
A reflection on why coaching can be adapted to many life projects.
Eight years ago, Bill Gates gave a TED talk in which he stated his position on coaching with a key phrase: "Everyone needs a coach".. The reason he used to launch this statement is that, in his opinion, we all need that person to give us feedback, to give us that vision about ourselves and what we do that leads us to improve in everything we set out to do.
What seemed like just another sentence in another conference of this famous computer scientist, entrepreneur and philanthropist, was the seed for the idea that not only the greats of Silicon Valley needed a coach, but that anyone at any time in their lives should probably have the help of this professional.
The coach has thus emerged as the key figure of the 21st century to teach people how to face new challenges and new circumstances. and the new circumstances that arise. And together with the professionalization of the coach's work, there are many reasons that ratify the famous statement that everyone needs a coach. These reasons are as many and as diverse as there are people and different realities. We will try to delimit some of them.
Coaching in the face of uncertainty
It has taken a global pandemic for many of us to realize the uncertainty in which we live. Nothing is certain, many circumstances can change around us overnight, and there is nothing we can do to control it. and we can do nothing to control them because they are much bigger than we are.
If we let ourselves be carried away by this idea, we can panic and find ourselves paralyzed, overwhelmed by the situation. It is precisely in this area that a coach can act so that we do not allow ourselves to be engulfed by those things that are beyond our control.
The professional coach provides the wonderful weapon of perspective in such situations. It allows us to see ourselves from outside that special juncture, understanding our role in them but, above all, making us discover our own tools with which we can use to help us to find the tools we need, making us discover the tools we have at our disposal in order not to stand still and not to get stuck in a situation like this..
In this way a coach teaches us to live, that is, to move forward despite the many moments of uncertainty that arise throughout a person's life.
Coaching to know oneself better
It is surprising that we live in the time of greatest connection between people through all the options that technology puts at our fingertips and, at the same time, it is one of the times when we are least connected with ourselves. one of the times when we are least connected to ourselves..
It is increasingly common to hear people say "I'm lost, I don't know what to do with my life..." and this is the result of the internal disconnection that has taken hold today. We know more about the desires and wishes of others by what is exposed in social networks than about what we have ourselves.
Through a coaching process, a person can get back in touch with his or her own essence, that reason for living and being that is getting lost in the welter of obligations and worries. And, above all, through this re-connection to bring out that potential that he/she has and that probably would have been lost as well..
It is not an easy process, but the coach is able to make us find again the compass that marks the path to follow towards the destination we want; in short, he is able to make us take the reins of our life that we sometimes let go without realizing it.
Coaching to evolve
One of the reasons why we need a coach is to be able to evolve in different areas of our lives.. How many people remain in a fictitious comfort zone that in reality does them no good just because they are afraid to take the next step. They focus on "the bad things known are better than the good things yet to be known", thus prolonging a meaningless existence that they do not deserve.
We are referring to those people who keep a job that does not fulfill them even though they want and know they need something more; or those people who prolong a relationship in which there is hardly any love and respect because it is better to continue in that vicious circle rather than break everything into pieces to free themselves.
It is not that a coach helps you to know how to find in yourself the courage and bravery to make that change, but above all it allows you to understand that this change is necessary in your life. understand that this change is necessary in your life to be able to evolve towards a better version of yourself and, ultimately, to be able to experience a fuller life.
Coaching to be happier
If a coach can help us learn to deal with the external circumstances that influence us but that we cannot control; if it also allows us to focus our lives to take advantage of our maximum potential; and if, on top of that, it provides us with the tools to not settle into a fictitious comfort zone, what this figure is achieving is something that we all yearn for continuously: being able to be happier in our day-to-day lives..
So seeing what coaching in general, and the coach in particular, can achieve in anyone, whatever the type of person, it is clear that the statement "everyone needs a coach" that once made Bill Gates, is most accurate.
