Hilsenroth claims that carfentanil is up to "ten thousand times more potent than morphine," and was even among the substances investigated as a chemical weapon.

Regarding gray death, David Rausch, Knoxville police chief, states that "there are chemical compounds in this drug that are very dangerous", and warns that "gray death is 100 times more potent than fentanyl and 10,000 times stronger than morphine".

Aware of its fatal effects, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has called on authorities to take precautionary measures beyond those used with other opioids because, they say, "just by touching this substance, an individual can be killed by it, just by touching this substance an individual can die from an overdose, as the drug is absorbed through the skin..

A very deadly drug
