What is Modafinil and how does it help?

Modafinil is a drug which is used as prescription for narcolepsy, increases concentration, the perception, memory abilities and eliminates sleepiness. As a dietary supplement, it is proud to be among nootropics. The medication helps people to get rid of sleepiness during the day and is often recommended for the treatment of narcolepsy. It improves the perception by stimulating neurotransmitters in the human brain, and is also used to improve mental abilities.

Briefly on Modafinil’s creation and usage.

Modafinil was created by French Lafon Laboratories. In 1998, the medication was approved for sale in the US, where it is currently sold under the brand name Provigil. It is also found at the international market under this one and other trade names, which include Modiodal, Vigil and Modasomil. Although this drug has a favorable safety records in the United States, it used to be considered as a drug capable of provoking possible abuses.

In 2000-2004 the medication under the name Modafinil became popular among athletes, but after that athletic regulatory authorities started showing concern on the usage of the given drug. In 2004 it broke out the doping scandal which was involving the company VALCO, when people found out that some of the athletes who won competitions applied this medication. After that accident, the IOC prohibits the usage of the drug and through a series of research there has been developed methodology which helps to detect this chemical in the urine.

When healthy people take 100-200 mg of modafinil in 2 hours before the test (arithmetic test), it improves the properties of their memory, visual-spatial scheduling and rate of reaction. Short-term memory and accuracy of processing the information improve after the adoption of 200 mg of this medication. In addition to the facts mentioned above, there is enhancement in doing the tasks in general - pleasure with the work done and increased motivation.

Methamphetamine-dependent patients with cognitive impairment who take 400g dose of the drug (broken in 3 days) can improve the properties of their short-term memory that was not previously possible, but one dose of 200 mg of modafinil cannot actually cause such effects. Single dose of the drug (250 mg) given to patients with multiple sclerosis showed the improvement of mnemonic play, this effect was comparable with the placebo effect, but on the fatigue, the ability to focus and speed of processing the information the drug had no effect.
