Fluid retention How to avoid it?
In our body, water is distributed in different compartments, in the plasma (which is part of the blood) and inside and outside the cells. When the balance between the water inside and outside those cells is broken, increases the amount of extracellular water and that's when the fluid retention, forming edemas.
The edema are areas where there has been a increased extracellular water. You can suffer local edema or throughout the body (less common). The ankles, eyelids or wrists are the most commonly affected areas The edematous area is observed swollen or bulging, the skin is stretched and often brighter. If we press with the finger we can see how the footprint is marked on the skin and gradually disappears.
- Fluid retention is an imbalance between the amount of water that is inside the cells and outside of them.
- The causes of fluid retention can be very diverse, from hormonal changes to kidney problems, treatment with certain drugs, or sedentary lifestyle and poor eating habits.
- The dietary treatment consists of ensuring sufficient hydration and a diet rich in plant products and poor in processed and salty foods.
