Measurements of the embryo in the first trimester of pregnancy
| Pregnancy begins with the fertilization of the ovum by the sperm that will give rise to what is known as Zygote. What happens during the first trimester of pregnancy?
This occurs in the fallopian tube and as the zygote begins to divide and pass the morula stage it moves to the uterus where implantation takes place, approximately one week after fertilization.

- Week 5: the embryo is a small thickened disc that begins to be visible by ultrasound measuring about 2-3 mm and is located within the gestational sac.
- Week 6 the embryo measures about 5 mm and the heartbeat is observed.
- Week 7 the embryo already measures between 7 and 17 mm and the cephalic pole can be distinguished from the rest of the body.
- Week 8 It measures between 18 and 25mm, the head is perfectly distinguished, the brain and spinal cord are beginning to form. The outlines of the four limbs are also formed.
- Week 9 It measures between 25 and 35 mm, the body begins to be longer with respect to the head, the limbs develop and the bones of the face begin to form.
- Week 10 It measures between 35 and 45 mm, the hands and feet are formed with its fingers and it already looks human. He is able to move the limbs independently and the ribs and bones of the spine are formed.
- Week 11 the embryo already measures between 40 and 60 mm and the head measures half of the entire embryo.
- Week 12 it measures between 60 and 80 mm and we are already talking about a fetus and not an embryo. The formation of the organs has finished and a basically growth stage will begin. The limbs are formed and the fingers are already separated. The kidneys begin to form urine.
- Week 13 the fetus measures between 6.5 and 8 cm. The head is still disproportionate to the body, measuring approximately half the size of the body. The eyes are centered and the ears are no longer as low as at the beginning. The external genitalia are already formed. He already moves his limbs and begins to use his hands.
