We had it somewhat quiet, but the three creators of the digital magazine Psychology and Mind we have been quite busy during the first months of this year.

The project we had in hand was nothing more and nothing less than the development of our first popular book on psychology. "Psychologically Speaking": an introductory book on psychology.

We wanted Psychologically Speaking to be an introductory book on psychology which begins to explain things from scratch, that is, a book suitable for all kinds of curious people not necessarily informed about the subject.

In the first pages we talk about basic aspects of what psychology is, what topics are studied from it and what it is used for, while then we review its history and the jump to the scientific world, we talk about the functioning of the brain and we finish talking about several of the most relevant studies, researchers and discoveries of psychology and neuroscience.

In short, we have imagined Psychologically Speaking as a complete book, shorter than the classic manuals of more than 600 pages and more readable than most of them. A true work of synthesis: we have condensed the highlights of behavioral science into this book. which, by the way, you can also purchase from Amazon (follow the link).

From this idea we have started to work joining our words with the illustrations of Javier Pérez de Amézaga Tomás. We believe that you will like the result, since it offers a panoramic view of what psychology is and what it has been and at the same time presents these varied contents in an orderly and interrelated way so that it is difficult to get lost. At the end of the day, books on psychology can be of interest to all kinds of people, and it is good to make it easy for everyone without settling for explaining little.

The creation process

At Psychology and Mind we know that psychology is a discipline that covers many areas and topics. You can talk about the history of psychology, the discoveries that have been made in its field, the relationship it has with neuroscience, what it teaches us about mental processes and the way we relate to each other and make decisions, and so on. It is also interesting to talk about the philosophical themes on which the different historical currents of psychology are based, and to see to what extent they are forms of science or not.

All of this makes it difficult to explain what psychology is.. It is not possible to talk about a more or less fixed sequence of very important discoveries that have been accumulated one on top of the other, as happens in the natural sciences, because psychology is a bridge discipline between them and the social sciences. This means that in psychology there have been few single investigations that "prove" ideas: in this science, in order to make progress it is necessary to test the same theory many times.

Moreover, since in psychology there is no unified theory, practically all the results obtained in an investigation can be interpreted in radically different and opposing ways.

This basically means that the most difficult part of this project has been the beginning: how to order so many ideas and make them into a meaningful whole.. After much thought and modification of texts, we have decided that it is best to start from the basic definitions at the beginning, move on to the description of the historical roots of psychology afterwards, and then tackle different relevant topics separately on the basis erected.

Thus, Psychologically Speaking is not only a book in which interesting ideas are presented. It is also an effort to bring some order to this apparent chaos and to give an understandable and structured picture of psychology.
