Royal jelly, discover its benefits
- It is made by bees from honey, nectar and water, and is the exclusive food of queen bees, which live much longer, are larger and the only ones that reproduce.
- It has a recognized toning and vital tone recovery action.
- It is especially indicated in children, women in menopause and the elderly.
Royal jelly is a substance produced by nurse bees (young worker bees 5 to 14 days old) in the hypopharyngeal and mandibular glands. It is, therefore, a substance that they make inside from honey, nectar and water that they collect from the outside. It is a substance very rich in nutrients of high biological value that bees supply to all larvae during the first three days of life and which is then the sole privilege of queen bees that feed on jelly throughout their lives. From the third day the rest of the bees are fed with a mixture of pollen, honey and water (bee bread). This difference in feeding is what determines that the queens can live up to 5 years, compared to the 30 to 45 days that the workers live, which are larger and are the only ones with reproductive capacity, they can put between 2,000 and 3,000 eggs in a day.
Composition
Royal jelly contains: proteins; lipids; carbohydrates; water-soluble vitamins, mainly (especially B5 or pantothenic acid); mineral salts and trace elements (potassium, calcium, sodium, zinc, iron, copper and manganese).
In addition, it contains amino acids of high biological value, nucleotides and its own fatty acid, 10-hydroxy-∆2-decenoic acid (10-HAD), which constitutes up to 15% of all royal jelly, and has action on different functions of metabolism and of reinforcement of the immune system.
How it benefits
Royal jelly, together with one, is indicated as a nutritional supplement and contribution of proteins, amino acids, vitamins, minerals and trace elements. Both the B group vitamins as well as the minerals and trace elements have a recognized toning action and recovery of the vital tone. Due to all this richness in nutrients, it has been shown to be useful in: loss of appetite; in convalescence (after colds, flu, etc.); in periods of growth; in sports, to help the body recover from physical fatigue; in study periods, exams or times of greater intellectual activity; in states of stress; to reinforce the defenses and in that it accompanies the changes of season.
In children, women in menopause and the elderly
Its indication in growing children is corroborated by clinical studies. In a study of children who were born prematurely and were stunted, it was found to promote growth and development of body mass (Malossi and Grandi, 1963). In another study carried out in children with different degrees of malnutrition due to different causes, it was also useful for their development (Prosperri et al. 1963).
Royal jelly is also beneficial for women at the time of birth, since in addition to providing minerals, necessary for bone formation and joint preservation, it increases the absorption of these minerals when ingested through the diet. Likewise, older people can benefit from the properties of royal jelly because at this stage of life the intestine loses its ability to absorb nutrients, and the jelly, in addition to providing a supplement, tones and helps to gain energy.
