Definition
The seminogram consists of the study of a semen sample from the patient for its quantitative and qualitative analysis in a specialized laboratory.
The quantitative analysis of semen allows to know the sperm volume or quantity of ejaculated sperm as well as the concentration or number of sperm per millimeter of semen analyzed.
The qualitative analysis of the semen allows to know characteristics of the sperm such as viscosity, pH or color; as well as specific characteristics of sperm such as morphology, mobility and vitality.
How is the study done?
The semen analysis requires the taking of a semen sample which is obtained through postmasturbation ejaculation. The sample must be deposited in a specific container for this, sterile and closed, collecting the entire ejaculate. The collection of the sample can be carried out at the patient's home or in the office itself, in any case, it must be delivered for study within a maximum period of one hour after ejaculate.
In general, it is necessary to take and study a second sample between 3-4 weeks after the first to confirm the results obtained.
The samples obtained after sexual intercourse or contained in a condom are not valid for study as they are non-sterile samples.
Preparation for the study
Sexual abstinence must be maintained for a minimum of 3-5 days and a maximum of 7 days prior to collection to guarantee a good sample.
The collection of the sample should be avoided if the patient is undergoing a feverish process or if they are undergoing certain treatments, in which case they should first consult their doctor.
Study risks.
The seminogram is a technique that does not involve risks for the patient.
Contraindications to the study
There are no contraindications to the study.
The patient should indicate to his doctor if he suffers a feverish process or is undergoing any type of treatment before or during the collection of the sample.
What is the study done for?
The sperminogram is a simple and safe test, widely used in the field of Andrology as it provides very valuable information for the doctor and the patient himself.
Widely used in male fertility and family planning studies as it allows the rapid detection of sperm alterations that prevent pregnancy and that may be susceptible to treatment.
At the same time, it is used as a screening test after the practice of a vasectomy to ensure its effectiveness.
