Sport and pets
According to some studies published and referenced by the "American heart Association" and the "Spanish heart Foundation", those who live with a dog tend to have better physical activity habits, compared to those who do not have a "can" in their life. Specifically, 54% is the percentage that makes the difference in terms of physical activity between owners of pets, specifically dogs, and those who are not.
- It has been shown that those who live with a dog are more physically active than those who do not have a pet.
- The obligation to walk them reduces sedentary lifestyle and the health risks associated with it.
- The ideal is to turn the obligation into a habit and turn the walks with the dogs into moments of physical activity in which you can even run or go cycling with them.
Take a walk with your pet.
Due to the obligation to go out for a walk with him a few times a day, the owner is forced to go out and therefore, to spend less time sitting. As a consequence, by reducing the time related to sedentary lifestyle, the risk factors for diseases associated with it are reduced in the same way.
The pathologies that have their risk factors reduced are, above all, those of cardiovascular origin. The blood pressure, cholesterol and weight figures obtain the benefits of going outside, accompanying the pet.
Walk, run, bike ...
What is evident is that not by having a dog at home, the risks are minimized but rather you have to be proactive. What begins as an obligation ends up being a habit, which is the goal to keep in mind. It begins by going out for a walk and sometimes it ends by going for a run, riding a bicycle with someone else. In this case it is also important to take into account the breed of dog of our "fatigue companion", since not all breeds are prepared for the effort to which they can be subjected. In general, medium-sized dogs are the ones that adapt better to the race since both their joints and their weight will allow them to keep up or who knows if they will be the owner who will have to follow the dog. If the dog is off the leash, you have to be very clear and be very sure that it is not going to separate from its owner. If it is on a strap, if the bicycle is tied to the risk of falling or the strap becoming entangled there is, therefore, the rapport must be maximum.
The belt.
If the leash is for jogging, there are already special accessories that keep the two “runners” connected. It is a set consisting of a harness for the dog, a belt for the owner and what is known as "the shooting line" which is the material that joins both. This is how “canicross” practitioners go out to run, which is a modality derived from the “Mushing” (sled pulled by dogs) introduced in Spain 15 years ago but which has been practiced for many years in Europe. There are canicross competitions but there are also groups whose objective is to go out to enjoy the sport, the landscape and be able to share it with their “most faithful friend”.
On the other hand, having a pet can not only be positive for preventing and minimizing risks, but there is a study published by "The American Journal of Cardiology," which relates a greater survival of people after a cardiac event, when comparing them with patients without a dog at home.
