Treatment of periodontal disease
In the early stages of the disease, treatment consists of removing tartar or plaque from the tooth. The technique used to remove the layer of tartar deposited in the visible (or supragingival) parts of the tooth is called oral hygiene or scalectomy.
Sonic or ultrasonic instruments powered by compressed air or electrically are used to perform the scale. With this it is possible to eliminate not only the bacterial plaque but also the and the exogenous stains of the teeth.
As periodontal disease progresses, the treatments to be carried out will be more complex and aggressive. The objective pursued is always the removal of bacterial plaque and tartar or dental calculus, responsible for the inflammation of the periodontium.
Curettage
In this line of treatment the following therapeutic option would be curettage and root planing. For these techniques an instrument called a "curette" is used, which is the main tool of the periodontist. The curette has a sharp end that facilitates polishing of the root surface and the removal of bacterial colonies and mechanical and chemical irritants that cause inflammation.
This treatment allows the reattachment of the gum to the tooth and the disappearance or reduction of the periodontal pockets (cul-de-sac formed between the diseased gum and the tooth and occupied by inflammatory products and dental calculus). The absolute disappearance of the periodontal pocket and the correct adhesion of the gingiva to the tooth are the most reliable markers of the success of our treatment, being the desired result.
If it persists ...
If, after the application of these treatments, a stabilization of the periodontal disease is not achieved, we will continue with the next therapeutic link, which, in this case, would already be the surgical one. The periodontal surgical treatment It is also performed in the consultation but, in this case, under local anesthesia and accessing the periodontal pocket directly through the surgical lifting of the gingiva, it is what we call "gingival flap".
There are several surgical techniques, depending on the severity of the disease. It fits discard the treatment resource with antibiotics as an adjunct or added to the previous treatment in order to optimize results and eradicate the opportunistic germs that superinfect the diseased mouth. It is not a protocolized treatment but it is usually used for the most rebellious cases.
