Ringworm it can be located on the nails, skin or scalp.
Causes
The ringworm fungus They can be contracted by direct contact with contaminated elements: soil, animals, brushes, showers ... For the infection to develop, adequate humidity and heat are necessary for the fungus.
Types of ringworm and location:
- Corporal ringworm: it is the fungal infection of the skin. It manifests as scaly, raised-edged pink patches that itch and grow slowly.
- Jock itch or groin: it is the infection of the fungus in the groin and affects mainly men in the groin area and the inner thigh. The shape is very similar to that of ringworm and is usually itchy.
- Ringworm of the head: these are fungal infections of the scalp. They can be of two types: superficial infection or another deep and inflammatory one. In superficial infection, the hair and the root are affected, causing it to fall out. In inflammatory ringworms it produces a very spectacular infection, with suppuration of pus (it is called Querion de Celso) and these are more serious situations.
- Onychomycosis: it is the infection of fungal nails. They give an abnormal color to the nail and make it more brittle. They are very resistant to treatment.
- Athlete's foot: It is a red, scaly rash that produces cracks between the toes. It causes itching and an unpleasant odor on the feet. It is very common in adolescents and can be contracted in pool showers if slippers are not used to protect the feet.
Ringworm treatment
Treatment is with antifungal creams or orally depending on the severity and location.
Prevention
To avoid ringworms, you must maintain good body hygiene, keep body folds and skin clean and dry (armpits, groin, toes), avoid synthetic fibers and shoes that do not breathe.
