We can classify vaginismus as primary or secondary.
- Primary vaginismus is that which appears from the first attempt at sexual intercourse: the couple does not achieve penetration because they have the sensation of bumping into a wall.
- Secondary vaginismus is the one that appears after a variable time of sexual intercourse without difficulty but that for some reason becomes painful and the woman contracts the muscles.
Why is it produced?
There can be multiple causes of vaginismus.

How is it treated?
First of all, a good medical history should be taken in the consultation of a specialist and then a medical examination to rule out organic causes that will have a medical or surgical treatment.
If psychological treatment is required, first of all, the patient must understand her problem well and know how to identify it. How involuntary contraction of the musculature occurs must be understood in order to learn how to avoid it. For this, physical therapy with Kegel exercises are of great help. In the same way that these exercises in patients with teach how to contract the muscles so that they can exercise and become stronger, they also show how to relax them when they contract involuntarily.
Vaginal dilators help to relax the muscles by gradually entering the vagina from the smallest to the largest. They are not instruments that increase the size of the vagina but, used properly, help prevent involuntary contractions of the muscles of the outer third of the vagina.
In cases of women with a partner, it is important that their partner is involved in the treatment and goes to the therapist whenever requested.
With the help of the right professionals, the success rate for vaginismus treatment is very high.
