Vitiligo
Vitiligo It is a common disease, affecting 1-2 people per 100 inhabitants, regardless of their race or condition. It is not a contagious disease.
How is it produced?
The vitiligo It occurs because the skin cells that produce melanin are destroyed: melanocytes. This occurs because the skin's own defenses (the immune system) react in the wrong way by attacking these cells. It is important to rule out in vitiligo patients that this reaction occurs against other cells of the body, such as those of the thyroid gland or the adrenal gland. However, most vitiligo patients do not have other health problems, and the main problem is the cosmetic alteration that the disease brings. Some, but not all, patients have relatives who have suffered from the disease, which points to a hereditary tendency in some cases of vitiligo.
