World Health Day
| The origin of the word health goes back to the Latin “salus” or “salvatio”, which means: “to be in a position to overcome an obstacle”. This meaning has evolved in our society until, in 1946, the World Health Organization (WHO) defined health as "that state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, and not only the absence of diseases or illnesses."
It is the World Health Organization (WHO) itself that, in 1950, establishes that each April 7 "World Health Day" is celebrated. Throughout these 78 years, a multitude of topics have been given prominence from mental health, child health or oral health. Cross-cutting issues of great global interest have always been dealt with, affecting the entire population to a greater or lesser extent. For this year, the chosen theme is "Build a fairer and healthier world"seeking to give visibility to extreme situations, in countries where health coverage is not universal. Getting immediate attention in difficult situations can save lives and this is the goal of this year's campaign.
Returning to the concept of health, as its definition indicates, health includes different spheres in which well-being is the pillar. The sphere of physical, mental and the social is equally important and there needs to be a balance between all of them, so that the person is considered healthy. Each of them encompasses broad considerations, being entities with a “proper name”.
Mental health
It is defined as “a state of well-being in which the individual is aware of their own capabilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully and is capable of making a contribution to their community”, by what is evident that it is an indivisible part of the well-being and the personal health. That is why on many occasions he has dedicated “to some of the pathologies that most frequently affect the population. In fact, it is so important that it has its own day on the calendar, specifically the October 10th.
There are many pathologies to which they have wanted to give visibility, one of them being the one that played a leading role in 2017. According to WHO data, more than 300 million people in the world suffer from depression, the main cause of disability, and more than 260 million have anxiety disorders. Suffering from mental problems can clearly limit someone's day-to-day life and therefore end up affecting their general health.
Most of the WHO initiatives involve the community, seeking to create awareness and actions that imply changes for the future. In the last mental health campaign of 2017, specific data related to economic investment and the results that can be obtained when resources are used appropriately were used. The investment in it has a yield of 400% and even having this data the reality is that little is invested and it costs a lot.
Physical Health
In addition to mental health, the definition speaks of the welfare. It seems obvious to relate the good health of the person with good physical health, but as we have mentioned before there are other factors of well-being necessary to achieve full health:
- To be able to move freely
- Not suffer pain
- Not having to medicate
To reach maturity in condition, having good habits is essential. We are all going to grow old irretrievably. The group of people over 65 will grow from 605 million to 2 billion in the course of half a century. The years will pass for each of us, and it is in our hands aging healthily.
Establish a correct diet or the practice of physical activity, are individual and small decisions but that contribute greatly to personal evolution. So much so that after the success of World Health Day 2002 under the slogan “For your health, move on”, it was decided that on April 6 the World Day of Physical Activity would be celebrated. It was not in vain that this decision was made since physical inactivity is one of the main risk factors for mortality worldwide and is one of the main risk factors for suffering from non-communicable diseases (NCDs), such as cancer and cancer. diabetes.
Mark your calendar for April 7 as a date to consider since this allows us to expand knowledge on topics of general interest about global health, but on which we can act individually.
