Novo Nordisk Pharma Generic drugs
Novo Nordisk
Novo Nordisk is Danish pharmaceutical company founded in 1923 that operates internationally and is 14th largest pharmaceutical company in the world by the volume of sales of prescription medicines.
The company has manufacturing facilities in eight countries, and affiliates or offices in 75 countries.
History of the company
The history of the company is ninety years of innovation and leadership in the treatment of diabetes. It all started when in 1922, the Nobel Prize winner Danish physiologist August Krogh received a permit to produce and sell insulin from Professor J. MacLeod, the head of the University of Toronto, where the world's first insulin extract was produced the year before.
Together with Dr. Hans Christian Hagedorn, Professor A. Krogh conducted a number of successful studies and in 1923 established the company called Nordisk Insulin Laboratorium, which engaged in the manufacturing of insulin for the treatment of diabetes. Today, the year 1923 is considered the year of the foundation of Novo Nordisk.
In 1925 the brothers, Harald and Torvald Pedersen, former companions of A. Krogh, created the competing company Novo Terapeutisk Laboratorium. Throughout the 20th century, both companies, continuously competing with each other, have made a number of important discoveries in the field of diabetes care. This allowed them to become the world's leading insulin producers.
The series of scientific discoveries continued after the merger of companies in 1989. To this day, Novo Nordisk has paid special attention to scientific research and development, offering all new medicines to meet the needs of medicine and retaining the position of a leader in biotechnological innovation.
Every day Novo Nordisk diabetes drugs are used by more than 28 million patients in 180 countries, and this is every second patient in the world. The drug-making company also holds leading positions in such areas as hemostasis management, growth hormone therapy, hormone replacement therapy for women, and obesity treatment.
The headquarters of Novo Nordisk is located in Denmark. More than 41,000 employees work in 77 branches around the world, and its products are supplied to 165 countries.
The shares of Novo Nordisk, type B, are listed on NASDAQ OMX Copenhagen (Novo-B). American Depositary Receipts (ADRs) are circulating on the New York Stock Exchange (NVO).
The brands of the company are widely recognized and enjoy a high level of trust among doctors, scientists and patients. This is facilitated by a narrow specialization, high research potential, as well as an established monitoring system for both quality of the drugs themselves and for their distribution.
Social responsibility and contribution
The implementation of its social duty and environmental protection are an integral part of Novo Nordisk's strategy.
The company believes that long-term business prosperity is possible only if it has a positive impact on the economy, the environment and society.
In practice this means that the company makes responsible decisions taking into account financial, social and environmental consequences. Thus, it constantly improves the efficiency of its activities and the contribution to the development of society.
The examples of the social work include the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the Danish Red Cross (DRC) and Novo Nordisk partnership to take hold of the growing issue of non-communicable disease that affect millions of people living in humanitarian crises around the world. This program is structured in such as way that first of all needs assessment and analysis is made; then equipment and supply management that ensures the providing of the health facilities in the areas in need with the required equipment for diagnosis and treatment as well as essential medications; development of field projects to reduce the incidence of non-communicable diseases; monitoring and evaluation of the introduced programs.
Besides, the company initiated the Novo Nordisk Hemophilia Foundation (NNHF), a grant-making, non-profit organization aimed to enhance access to care for people with hemophilia and allied bleeding disorders in developing and emerging countries.
The company also has a long-term financial commitment to the World Diabetes Foundation (WDF). It had already donated 329 million dollars to the organization.
These are only several social responsibility programs by Novo Nordisk. If you want to find out more, you can visit the company’s official website.
