The company is one of the oldest drug manufacturers in India as it was founded back in 1944. Nowadays, it is one of the most fast-developing and growing companies that have its subsidiaries in the U.S., Latin America, Canada, and European countries.

The annual revenue of the company is 110 million of the U.S. dollars. By 2017, Unichem Laboratories employed 4700 people in India and other countries. The company has seven production facilities for active pharmaceutical ingredients and ready-to-use formulations and a state-of-art research center with over 200 scientists working at it.

History of Unichem Laboratories

The company was founded in 1944 by an entrepreneur Amrut Mody and was mostly focused on the distribution of medications. The first company’s production facility was built in 1962. At the same time, the company became public, i.e. its shares were for the first time traded on the Bombay exchange.

In 1963, the company started cooperation with Uni Sankyo -Co-Marketing formulations and in 1969 commissioned a new production plant.

In 1972, the company was awarded a government award for the pioneering efforts in the Indian Pharma Industry.

In 1978, a new plant was built. In 1997 and 1998, two more plants were commissioned, one in Goa and another at Baddi.

In 2002, the company entered the European market creating a joint venture with the UK-based company called Niche Generics Limited. In 2005-2006, the company acquired 100% of the joint venture shares and became its sole owner. Besides, in 2005 it got approval for its Goa formulation plant from the American FDA which meant that now the company is able to export its products into this highly regulated market. Since 2007, all production facilities of the company gained the certification of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as well as similar agencies from other countries to which markets Unichem Laboratories exports its products.

Throughout the years, Unichem Laboratories expanded its presence on the international markets through the establishment of joint ventures or acquisition of local companies. To date, it has the following subsidiaries: Niche Generics in the UK, Unichem South Africa Ltd, Unichem Farmaceutica do Brasil Ltda & Unichem Pharmaceuticals (USA). Besides, the company exports to the whole Asia, CIS, and Africa.

Research of Unichem Laboratories

In the mid-2000s, the company unified all of its research capabilities in one large research center in Goa. Now it employs over 200 scientists passionate about their work and mission to develop new more effective and cost-effective medications as well as improve already existing ones.

The research and development department of the company achieved more than twenty new patents for new medication delivery in systems in the U.S. and Europe. It made over five hundred product registrations internationally and had been granted the Certificate of suitability to European Pharmacopeia by European Directorate for the Quality of Medicines and Healthcare.

The major areas for research by Unichem Laboratories currently are the creation of value-added generic formulations, i.e. betterment of already existing products forms such as extended and immediate release formulations, delayed release formulations, new drug delivery system, as well as the development of new chemical entities.

Besides the small molecule chemical entities, Unichem Laboratories also invests in the research of complex molecules and biotechnology dedicating to this area of research a separate unit in the Goa research center. This facility is also equipped with the latest technology for molecular biology research, fermentation facility, protein purification facility, biotransformation facility, and so on.

Besides performing its own research, the company’s research center also creates partnerships with other pharmaceutical companies and research centers who are interested in investing joint efforts in a common cause of the development of new medications and improvement of the existing ones.

Manufacturing facilities of Unichem Laboratories

The company has formulation manufacturing facilities in Goa, Baddi, Ghaziabad, and Sikkim. The active pharmaceutical ingredients that are then sold to other pharmaceutical companies who sell them under their trademarks are manufactured at the plants in Roha, Pithampur, and Kolhapur.

The quality control at the facilities is ensured by the work of Quality department that ensures timely updating of the technologies, processes, equipment, and correspondence to the current Good Manufacturing Practice norms. Because of the adherence to the highest quality standards, all of the company’s plants are currently approved by the US FDA, UK MHRA, MCC (South Africa), TGA (Australia), PMDA (Japan), and others.

The formulation facilities together have the capacity of producing around 9 billion of tablets and 800 million capsules as well as around a hundred million bottles of syrup, 50 million vials for injections, and so on.
