Generic Aldomet (Methyldopa 250 mg) Medication guide:
More facts about Generic Aldomet (Methyldopa 250 mg):
Generic Aldomet (Methyldopa) is a medication from the class of phenylethylamines, a stimulant and relaxant used to lower elevated blood pressure in hypertension. The drug is one of the few medications that are allowed to be used during pregnancy. The medication was developed in 1960 and currently is included in the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines. At our online pharmacy you can buy Aldomet or Generic Aldomet (Methyldopa).
When should the drug be used?
The medication can be used in hypertension type 1 and 2 associated with old age and pregnancy-induced hypertension as well as pre-eclampsia, a condition that can occur during pregnancy which is accompanied with high blood pressure and increased amounts of protein in the urine.
Worth noting that upon the withdrawal of Aldomet, the blood lowering action is relatively quickly terminated. The elevation of blood pressure usually occurs within 48 hours after the stop of the therapy.
Some patients after 1-1.5 months of the oral drug intake develop resistance and the hypotensive effect reduces. In such cases, it is reasonable to use the drug along with other medications to lower blood pressure and diuretics such as Hydrochlorothiazide. However, in combined therapy the dosages should be lowered.
What is the mechanism of action of Aldomet (Methyldopa)?
When the medication is taken by mouth or injected intravenously, it penetrates the blood-brain barrier and is metabolized in the central nervous system, first turning into a-methyl dopamine, then into a-methylnoradrenaline. The latter, like clonidine, stimulates central alpha2-adrenergic receptors, inhibits sympathetic impulses, which leads to a decrease in blood pressure. Hypotension (lowered blood pressure) is accompanied by a slowdown in the heart rate, a decrease in cardiac output and a decrease in peripheral vascular resistance.
Methyldopa-based medications are used as an antihypertensive agent for various forms of hypertension, especially in stages IIA and IIB.
The maximum blood pressure lowering effect is achieved within 4-6 hours and maintains within 1-2 days after the intake. During the first days of the treatment with Aldomet (Methyldopa), the arterial pressure lowering effect is gradually increased.
In the intravenous injections, the maximum blood pressure lowering effect is achieved in 2-3 hours and the duration of the effect is 6-10 hours.
How to use Methyldopa?
Before you buy Aldomet (Methyldopa), make sure to consult your doctor first in order to be sure that the drug is suitable for you.
In a form of pills, the medication is taken by 250 mg 2-3 times a day by adults. If the desirable effect is not achieved, the dosage can be increased to 1-2 grams a day. The maximum daily dosage for adults is 3 grams.
If the medication should be used for children, the daily dosage is 0.01 gram or 10 microgram per kilogram of the body weight divided in 2-4 intakes. Then the dosage can be adjusted depending on the effect. The maximum daily dosage for children is 65 micrograms per kilogram of the body weight.
Before you order Aldomet (Methyldopa), make sure to clarify with your doctor whether you need to take only this drug or combine it with other medications as it is commonly prescribed along with saluretics (medications that promote renal excretion of sodium and chloride ions) and other antihypertensive drugs. In the combination therapy, the dosage of Methyldopa is usually lowered. The combination with saluretics is mostly indicated in cases of fluid retention in the body and the appearance of edema.
Worth noting that upon the withdrawal of Aldomet, the blood lowering action is relatively quickly terminated. The elevation of blood pressure usually occurs within 48 hours after the stop of the therapy.
Some patients, after 1-1.5 months of the oral drug intake develop resistance and the hypotensive effect reduces. In such cases, it is reasonable to use the drug along with other medications to lower blood pressure and diuretics such as Hydrochlorothiazide. However, in combined therapy the dosages should be lowered. For example, in the combination of Aldomet (Methyldopa) with 50 mg of Hydrochlorothiazide, the dosage should be 500 mg a day instead of the standard dosage.
The drug is excreted in urine. Therefore, in the kidney impairment the drug should be used in lowered dosages.
The dosages for the elderly people also should be adjusted carefully as the drug can cause a sharp blood pressure decrease. The treatment should be started from 250 mg and then the dosage can be gradually increased if the medication is well tolerated but the desirable effect is not achieved.
When using the drug, it is important to remember that it also has a sedative effect. Therefore, when you start the treatment and the dosage isn’t adjusted yet, you should refrain from driving vehicles or operating any industrial machines.
Using Aldomet (Methyldopa) during pregnancy and lactation
During the tests on rabbits, mice, and rats who received dosages of 1000 mg per kilogram of the body weight per day which is 16 higher than the recommended dosage for people, no negative effects had been observed. Nevertheless, it is proven that the drug penetrates placenta.
There are no sufficient data on the safety of the medication use during first and second trimesters of pregnancy. But the drug is considered safe for the third trimester and according to the "Recommendations of the 2011 European Society of Cardiology on the treatment of cardiovascular diseases during pregnancy," Methyldopa is the first drug of choice for the long-term use for hypertension treatment in pregnant women.
However, you should buy Generic Aldomet (Methyldopa) only if your doctor considers that the positive effect will outweigh the negative one.
The medication is found in breast milk so it’s not advised to use it if you decide to breastfeed.
Whom the drug is contraindicated?
You should not use the drug and inform your doctor if you have hypersensitivity to the pills’ components, hepatitis, cirrhosis, hepatic or renal failure, pheochromocytoma, depressive states, acute myocardial infarction, cerebrovascular diseases, autoimmune hemolytic anemia, collagenosis, parkinsonism or porphyria.
The medication should be carefully used in hepatitis (even history), acute failure of the left ventricle, and diencephalic syndrome.

When using the medication, you may experience various adverse reactions such as headaches, general weakness, nausea, vomiting, fever, and redness of the upper half of the body.

If you experience any of these or other side effects, contact your doctor immediately.
With what medications the drug should not be combined?
Antihypertensive effect of the medication is reduced by the adrenomimetics and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
When combined with haloperidol, undesirable effects on mental activity, in particular the emergence of disorientation and the slowing/difficulty of thinking processes are possible.
Combined with Lithium, the drug increases the risk of toxic effects of lithium salts.
Methyldopa should not be used in combination with MAO inhibitors. First of all, it can cause unhealthy excitability in patients receiving MAO inhibitors. Secondly, there are reports of migraines, elevated blood pressure and hallucinations. When co-administered with tricyclic antidepressants, a possible reduction of the antihypertensive effect of Methyldopa can occur.
There are other negative interactions with medications. In order to guard yourself from any unpleasant consequences, make sure to inform your doctor about all drugs that you use or plan to use at the same time as Generic Aldomet so he or she will advise you the more suitable options.
